04072003 Australian World War II soldier Owen Campbell the last survivor of the infamous Sandakan death marches has died in an Adelaide hospital aged 87. Eventually after Japans surrender three years later eight generals including Masaharu Homma were all executed for war crimes related to the unforgettable horrors of the Bataan Death March.

About 113 died within the first eight days and a group of about 35 were massacred near Tangkul. They had all escaped and been helped by the local population. He and the other survivors only lived because they were able to escape their Japanese captors on the march from Sandakan Camp.

Of the 1000-odd prisoners who left on the death marches about half died in the attempt. By that time there were only 183 of them left--142 Australian and 41 British POWs. They had escaped into the jungle either during the death marches or at Ranau.

Japanese soldiers also took part of the Death Marches. 13012018 Some 20000 soldiers whod survived the march and made it to the camp soon died there thanks to disease sweltering heat and brutal executions. During WWII he joined his father-in-law who was recruited by the Japanese to cut the trail to prepare for the marches.

Only six of the POWs who were Australians survived it. Colonel Saga cut his throat in 1945 to avoid being punished for the Sandakan atrocities. He is buried in Labuan war cemetery.
