Commencing on the 24 April 2020 this exciting 8 night 9 day trek will cover nearly 60kms of the Death March Tracks and will give you an insight into some of the reality that was the Sandakan Death Marches.

During WWII he joined his father-in-law who was recruited by the Japanese to cut the trail to prepare for the marches. 12042017 The harrowing history of the Death March began in 1942 when Australian and British POWs who had previously been captured during the Battle of Singapore were shipped over to North Borneo to construct camps and an airstrip at Sandakan. 12062020 2The last known Sandakan Death Marches track cutter died in 2018.

The second Sandakan Death March lasted for twenty-six days. 12022015 On 28 January 1945 the first of 455 PoWs in nine groups set off from Sandakan to march to Ranau on the 164-mile trek through the jungle and swamps. This 100-km section of the original death march route offers a unique experience for those who are reasonably fit and with a spirit of adventure.

My legs felt like lead from the constant climbing mentally I was exhausted from watching my every step trying not to slip on the blanket of decaying leaves and avoiding the black clay which was as slippery as a moss covered rock at the beach. Starving and weak our soldiers were forced to walk the 250 km route carrying heavy bags and surviving on starvation rations.

The prisoners were often forced to work at gunpoint with very little medical attention and food supplies. The remaining 353 prisoners had either died on the march from a combination of starvation sickness and exhaustion or were killed by the Japanese guards because they were too weak to continue the trek. The track had become a road of sorts and was very wide and open.

The emaciated prisoners in ragged clothes many with bare feet and the remainder in disintegrating boots suffering from malnutrition disease and tropical sores started out on the first of three marches that became known as the Death. 28112016 My trekking group have come to Labuan to bind together the Sandakan Death March Trek that began with many days of trekking through mountainous Borneo jungle and then riding a stock carriage train to the coast then a fast boat to the island. Of the 1000-odd prisoners who left on the death marches about half died in the attempt.

Tuaty Akau was the last known Sandakan Death March track cutter. By following in their footsteps we hope that all those who walk in their memory will gain an appreciation of their indomitable spirit their bravery and their determination.
