The Sandakan Death Marches remain the greatest and most inspiring stories in WWII. Despite appalling conditions the prisoners never gave up. They had escaped into the jungle either during the death marches or at Ranau.

At the time of the Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945 only six prisoners had survived the horrors of the Sandakan prisoner of war camp and the Sandakan Death Marches. Weak and sick prisoners staggered for about 260 kilometres along jungle tracks. 2122015 Those too sick to undertake the march were either later massacred at Sandakan or were sent by ship to other PoW camps where most met a similar fate.

The American and Filipino forces fought from an untenable position until formally surrendering to the Japanese on April 9. 2222018 The Sandakan Death Marches were war crimes perpetrated against surrendered Australian and British soldiers on the island of Borneo in World War II. Those too weak to march had been left behind in Sandakan where all died or were killed.

Historian Lynette Silver is recognised as the worlds leading authority on the WW2 history of Sandakan and the death marches. Many died on the way their bodies never recovered. Only six would survive.

The story of Sandakan and the death marches is one of the most tragic of World War Two. Their heroism their determination and their indomitable spirit are testimony to the strength of the human spirit and an inspiration to all.

Against all the odds by mid-February 1945 some PoWs all Australians were still arriving at Ranau. In 1945 2434 Allied POWs were marched at gunpoint through the Borneo rainforest by their Japanese captors. This soldier was shot while trying to escape and his body was buried by a local gardener about 12 kilometres from the Sandakan POW Camp.

In January 1945 the Allied forces successfully dropped a bomb destroying the airfield. Many had died en route whilst others succumbed after they arrived. The survivors of the second march reached Ranau on 27 June 26 days out from Sandakan.

Toward the end of the war when the Japanese decided to flee Sandakan most of the remaining prisoners were marched to their deaths. March route tertiary souces. About 113 died within the first eight days and a group of about 35 were massacred near Tangkul.

2390 prisoners from the Sandakan camp had been murdered by the Japanese in cold blood or by starvation sickness. Four of them recovered by a Frward Advance Party in the Ranau area in early August 1945. Map entitled Route of POW.

Starving and weak our soldiers were forced to walk the 250 km route carrying heavy bags and surviving on starvation rations. After the bombing Captain Hoshijima Susumi ordered the remaining prisoners to march to Ranau about 260 kilometers away.
